School Council

The Summer Recess is over and it is time to reinstate our School Council!

What is a School Council?
The School Council is an integral part of our school and is taken very seriously. It is a formal group of pupils who act as representatives for their classmates. It is a brilliant way of representing and contributing to Pupil Voice in the school. Students are elected, by their peers, to represent the views of all pupils, and also to improve their school. They help to make decisions about how the school is run and take on projects that support the children’s learning and development.

What makes a good School Councillor?

  • Have good problem solving skills
  • Confident speaking skills and excellent listening skills
  • Enjoy teamwork
  • Have an open mind to new ideas
  • Be responsible
  • Work hard to get things done

Organisation

Two representatives from each class  (Y1 - Y6) will be chosen by the class after a anonymous ballot voted within the class. An agenda is to be organised by Mrs Claxton with other members of the leadership team which is agreed at the end of each meeting for the subsequent meeting.
Minutes will be recorded by the children and fed back to their classes. It is a very responsible job, and School Councillors will share information with their class, and get ideas and views from pupils by talking. They will take ideas and suggestions from their class and bring these back to discuss at School council meetings and vote on actions that need to be taken.

What do I need to do?
Nothing! However… you may like to talk to your child about whether they would like to stand as a School Councillor. You might like to discuss what attributes your child has that would make them a good councillor. You might like to help them write their hustings speech as children who wish to be chosen can stand and tell their class why! You might also have a family discussion about elections and how the voting system works, especially as we can only elect 2 councillors for every class. Everything else will be done in school.

We aim to hold our first meeting after half-term on Friday 7th November. Each class teacher will talk to their class about when they will be holding their election. The meetings will then be held every fortnight. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support in our school and we hope this information is useful for you.

Best wishes,
Sally Claxton
