How did the Tudors navigate at sea?

Year 5 and 6 enjoyed visiting the museum today and learning about how Tudor sailors navigated using compasses, Astrolabes and a variety of other instruments. They had to look at mystery items and guess what they might be used for. Can you work out why they had a timer like this on a ship?
