Homework in School

Following conversations at the Parent Forum (slides which can now be found in the 'School Information' section of the Greenhouse Schools App) please find our homework plan for all years in school.

Cygnus Class

Cygnus class newsletter will detail ideas to support your child at home. This could include maths games or the sounds that children have learned in school this week should recap at home.

Cygnus, Delphinus & Pegasus - Reading

Whilst children are on our phonics programme, they will begin to bring home phonics books that should be read at home repeatedly to help build children's fluency. These should be returned the following week but some parents find it easier to leave the book in their child's book bag so that their child has it in school each day.

Reading (Y2-6)

When children no longer take part in daily phonics, they will move onto reading books from their class libraries. These libraries are real books that are banded based on difficulty of text and topic. Children will be assessed and then given a colour from which to pick. These books should be brought home and read to an adult in all years. Even those children who are confident readers need support with comprehension and understanding the deeper meanings of a book. Later in the term, children will bring home a reading challenge that will help us to celebrate all of the reading going on at home.

Maths Homework (Y1-6)

Children will receive a Maths Practice Journal. On the inside, there is a label which will detail which sections to do each week with the date that it is due in. This has been planned to correlate with the order and timing of learning in the classroom and therefore we would ask that you do not jump ahead and complete sections before the week they are due in.

Spelling (Y2-6)

Children from Year 2 upwards, who are no longer completing the phonics programme, take part in daily spelling lessons. As part of this, each child is given a logbook for them to record spellings that they find challenging or that they cannot spell yet. Children will write in these multiple times a week and therefore should bring them to school every day. Families should practice these words at home to ensure children know them. If you child did not receive one of these at the beginning of the academic year, they will do shortly.

Times Table Rockstars (TTRS) (Y3-6)

Children will receive a login for TTRS and we recommend that all children in KS2 complete 10 minutes of practice, 3 times a week. It is vital that children can recall their timestables up to 12x12, at pace, by the end of Year 4. Where this is not the case, children will not make the expected standard. Children in older years should also continue to practice these as it supports their wider maths understanding where concepts become more challenging.
