Cygnus - Reflect and Review

Dear Reception families

We have been learning about the festival of Diwali this week. In Drawing Club we read the story of Rama and Sita. We drew Hannuman, the Monkey King and asked the children how the monkeys might have got to the island in the story if they couldn’t build a bridge? There were some very inventive answers. Some of our favourites were submarines, helicopters and PawPatrol!

In art the children put their dough disco skills to practical use this week when we created Diva lamps out of clay. We will paint them as soon as they dry and then you can see their creations.

Monday was the Brake charities road safety day. We learned how to cross the road safely by stopping, looking, listening and thinking before crossing the road. We also highlighted how holding hands when crossing the road helps keep us safe.

Mathematics classes focused on parts and wholes. We used Mr Potato head to think about the parts making up a whole and considered whether we all had parts too? Our song of the week for maths was ‘Heads shoulders knees and toes’ and our Poetry Basket poem was ‘All about me’. Do ask the children if they remember it and can tell you about it.

We have explored money with Milo the dinosaur this week too. It was encouraging that most of the class opted to save their money to buy a treat later rather than spend it all at once!

We continue to work on achieving confidence with word blending before we start reading.

We continue working on the Nativity and the children are enjoying the Christmas music.

Nativity parts and slips with advice about costumes have now been sent home with the children and information is available on the Greenhouse app.

Next week we will be exploring Hanukkah and continuing our work on the Nativity.

Our personal, social and emotional development focus will be the NSPCC ‘No pants’ lesson.

Please ensure that any emails to inform the school of changes to pick up arrangements for the children go to the school office: office@nhps.org.uk and not the Early Years email account. Thank you.

Please make sure the children have a waterproof coat every day. We have outdoor play as often as possible and we need to be ready for changes in the weather. Please also bring a hat, scarf and gloves for the colder weather.

Children also need a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into to come into the classroom and a spare set of clothes, including pants and socks, for any accidents.

Please encourage the children to be as independent as possible with putting socks and shoes, jumpers and coats on and taking them off. The children need to be able to change their own shoes through the day and need shoes they can manage themselves independently.

Best wishes

The Reception Team
