Dear Reception Families

This week we looked at the Humpty Dumpty rhyme in the Drawing Club. Our vocabulary included: high, cracked, bump, plunge, dumpy, humpty and brittle. A Humpty is a low cushioned seat and we certainly use a few of those in Cynus class!

We also explored the rhyme through music, song and movement in our Humpty Dumpty music class and decorated eggs with paint.

To start the children off on their journey into scientific thinking we did an egg drop experiment. The children chose a material to protect their egg and placed it in a bag together with their egg to drop from the top of the Pirate ship in the garden. They hypothesised whether the egg would crack or not and after their experiment they recorded their results. There were lots of delighted smiles when they successfully protected their eggs. We also talked about there being no right or wrong answers when recording their results.

Our lunchtime poem was very autumnal this week as we talked about windy trees and falling apples. We had lots of discussion about apple pies and crumbles as a result!

Mathematics classes introduced the children to subitising (seeing numbers without counting). We use the Numberblocks to help the children learn. It would be a great opportunity to promote counting at home to watch with them. Do encourage children to count at every opportunity at home or when out and about.

The children have now learned their first 10 sounds.

This week we learned the sounds: i, n, p, g, o

Please practice the sounds with the children at home.

Thought of the Day is going well each morning. Thank you for helping the children prepare something to share. It has been a delight hearing their thoughts and ideas. The children have asked some thoughtful questions of each other too.

The children are settling in very well now and getting used to their routines.

We are sure you will be pleased to know that the hall reopens next week and so hot lunches will restart. Remember to make sure you place your orders online.

We are progressing well with our initial assessments. Here is some more information about the statutory assessment: Information for parents: reception baseline assessment

On Friday, the children had their first forest school adventure which they loved. It is definitely a highlight of the week.

Notices:

Please ensure that any emails to inform the school of changes to pick up arrangements for the children go to the school office: office@nhps.org.uk and not the Early Years email account. Thank you.

Please make sure the children have a waterproof coat every day. We have outdoor play as often as possible and we need to be ready for changes in the weather.

Children also need a pair of indoor shoes/plimsoles to change into to come into the classroom and a spare set of clothes, including pants and socks, for any accidents.

Wishing you all a great weekend.

Best wishes

The Reception Team
