Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review

Dear Parents,

In English, Corvus have been building towards our final ‘Big Write’ of term - the journey of a water  drop as it flows down a river from source to river mouth. We have planned a dramatic opening and started to think about the features and descriptions of a river in its upper and middle course, using the vocabulary that we had collected earlier in our unit.

In Maths, we have been studying fractions - introducing non-unit fractions, understanding that the whole is comprised of a particular number of equal parts, and looking at fractions as scales (such as on rulers or measuring jugs).

In Science, we have explored the water cycle, including the four key processes - evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection - and the associated changes of state. In Design and Technology, we started to explore bridges - what they are used for, famous bridges from around the world and how they can be built to withstand heavy loads.

As readers, we analysed a non-chronological report about rivers and retrieved key information as well as defining vocabulary within the context of a sentence.   In English, we familiarised ourselves with features of a non-chronological report and created our own colour coded system and checklist to identify each feature in a modelled example. In spellings, we focused on words where the digraph "ch" makes the /sh/ sound. Spellings: machine, chef, brochure, parachute and  chute.

As Mathematicians, we have been  looking at improper fractions and converting improper fractions into mixed numbers.

As Geographers, we have been looking at characteristics of an ordnance survey maps, paying particular attention to symbols and features.

Next week

Next week, Corvus will continue to build towards our Big Write, before the write itself and editing our stories to produce final pieces. In Maths, we will explore fractions on number lines and as bar models before our end of unit assessment. In Design and Technology, both classes will be building and evaluating bridges. In R.E., we will explore ‘What is really good about ‘Good Friday’?’

Other Information

We would be very grateful if children could bring in any cardboard or card with them on Monday. Specifically single-wall cardboard (e.g thin, not corrugated), think cereal box and thinner, not larger boxes.

Thank you to the Draco families who were able to attend the meeting this week regarding the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), the information from the meeting is now available in the School Information tab of the Greenhouse App. We would appreciate both classes continuing to practise their times tables daily in order to support their wider maths knowledge.
