Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review

Dear Parents,

Corvus

As writers, we have written about enduring a storm in two different types of text - a diary entry and poetry. We have written a diary entry and have started to put together some adjectives, similes and metaphors about various physical features associated with a storm. We will be writing our poems next week.

As Mathematicians, we have been learning about time - we have gone over the basics of how many minutes are in an hour and which hand is which. We have also started to learn about o’clock, half past and telling time to 5 minutes and the minute.

We have concluded our study of canals in History and have started our science unit. We have learned about the parts of a plant and their functions, and set up some experiments on plant growth, which we will be observing next week.

Draco

In English, Draco read a transcript of a documentary and listened to an audio recording  by David Attenborough.  Our focus is on Humanism in RE, therefore we will be making cross-curricular links with English by creating and filming our own mini-documentary series where we will think about the responsibilities humans have to  protect the environment.   As readers, we retrieved key information from a transcript and made interpretations about the text.  We have also looked at subordinating conjunctions. Spelling focus: anticlockwise, antifreeze and  antisocial.

As historians, we began looking at different types of transportation and building an understanding of chronology: we created our own timelines sequencing developments in transportation. This  was an enjoyable lesson where children used their talk tactics to discuss which mode of transportation had a significant impact and changed people’s lives the most.   It was lovely to see children using their critical thinking skills to analyse the evidence and draw their own conclusions.

In Maths, we used our knowledge on decimals and place value to improve our understanding of money.  With Mrs Canea, the children enjoyed counting in pounds and pence, and looking at the significance of the decimal.

HSA Spring Sprint Update

The distances are being counted each week, don’t forget to bring in your child’s form – Pegasus made it to Barrow in Furness and Aquila got to the Isle of Arran! Next week is national Walk to School week and there are a few exciting events happening. Look on the community news section of the Greenhouse app for more details.

Tuesday 19th May- Fun Run Club- Meet at 3.10- 4pm. Children must have an adult with them.

Thursday 21st May- Big Group Walk to School. Children must have an adult with them.

Next week

In English, Corvus will write their poems on a ship in a storm, before editing them and producing a ‘final’ version. In Maths, we will continue to study time, looking at am and pm; years, months and days; days and hours; start and end times.  In Science, we will observe and record the results of our experiments on plant growth, drawing conclusions about things that are essential. In R.E., we will explore Humanism and what motivates Humanists to lead ‘good’ lives.

Draco will be practising their residential assembly - all children were given their lines to bring home last Monday, please continue to help them to learn them.
