Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review

Dear Parents,

This week in Corvus, we had our residential at Runway’s End. We had a fantastic time, with a variety of activities designed to push ourselves and develop teamwork skills. They included orienteering, team low ropes and an outdoor climbing wall. Well done to all the children, who handled being away from home impressively and threw themselves into the activities.

In English, we have been writing a recount of our residential. In Maths, we finished off our unit on fractions, building our reasoning skills and taking our end-of-unit assessment. In History, we continued to be a team of canal engineers, looking at crossings.

As writers, we enjoyed creating a dialogue between three central characters from our class text; some children used a split dialogue to separate the spoken parts from the action. In Maths, we compared decimal numbers and looked carefully at our place value columns to ascertain the value of each digit.   As scientists, we explored the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants and dissected a lily using tweezers.  We also used magnifying glasses to examine the stigma, petals and pollen .

Next week

In English, Corvus will write about a storm, inspired by events in the book and Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes. We will use two different styles - a diary entry and poetry. In Maths, we will begin our unit on Time, exploring o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. In History, we conclude our unit on transport and canals before starting our new Science unit - Flowers, Plants and Seeds.

In Draco, we will be looking at a short clip from Planet Earth to practice narrating nature scenes in Attenborough’s style.  This will lead to a piece of creative writing and a lesson on how to use subordinate clauses.  In Maths, we will say goodbye to decimals as we begin our unit on money! With Mr Waldock, children will continue learning how to tell the time using an analogue and digital clock.  In History, we start our topic on transportation.
