Corvus and Draco - Reflect and Review
Dear Parents,
This week in Corvus, we wrote and edited our character descriptions of Mrs Tredagar. We have then started to look at storms in various forms - descriptions, images, music and diary entries, as we build towards writing our own diary entries about a storm next week.
In Maths, we have resumed our study of fractions, adding and subtracting them, partitioning the whole and exploring unit and non-unit fractions of a set of objects.
In History, we started to look at the history of transport in Oxford. We have then started to have a closer look at canals - what they are, how they differ from rivers and what their purpose was.
Draco
In English, we have been working towards balancing a narrative with dialogue. Inspired by an illustration of the three central characters, we created a piece of dialogue between the characters. As part of our outdoor learning, we created a piece of drama and captured a conversation. This was an enjoyable lesson where children thought carefully about their posture, voice and body language to capture their character’s demeanour. In Maths, we have been representing decimal numbers on a place value chart and understanding how to represent tenths and hundredths. Alternatively in Science, we have been in the role of botanists studying roots and the transportation of water: we set up a variety of experiments to understand capillary action.
Next week
Corvus will be going to our residential, for which we are all very excited. It promises to be a great trip!
In English, Corvus will continue to build towards writing about a storm, inspired by events in the book and Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes. In Maths, we will work on building our reasoning skills with fractions before our end-of-unit assessment. In History, we will continue our exploration of canals, becoming engineers commissioned to build a new canals in the 18th century and trying to find solutions to the various challenges that we will encounter along the way.
In English, Draco will plan how to write a piece of dialogue alongside their narratives using the correct punctuation: inverted commas, commas and full stops. We will structure the dialogue looking at how to use speech verbs and adverbs for effect. In Science, we will continue looking at plants.
We have a lot of unnamed uniform in school at the moment, please ensure that your child's uniform is all named so that it can make its way back to you.
