Corvus & Draco - Reflect and Review
Dear Parents and Carers,
This week has been full of exciting learning across the curriculum!
As Writers, Corvus have been drawing inspiration from Peter Brown’s ‘The Wild Robot’. This week, we have been focusing on Chapter 12 - ‘The Storm’. We have been exploring descriptive techniques and focusing particularly on our senses, gradually building up to our ‘Big Write’ on Friday, when we wrote our own account of an island storm. in Draco, we have enjoyed learning how to edit and proofread our log entries inspired by our class text, The Wild Robot. As a class, we have tried to get into the mindset of a robot by carefully selecting vocabulary linked to artificial intelligence. We made a conscious effort to use fronted adverbials, verbs and adjectives to paint a picture in the reader’s mind. As readers, we have been developing our skills in inference and oracy by finding evidence from the text to support our viewpoint in discussions.
As Mathematicians, Corvus have been expanding our knowledge of number lines, working with and estimating on them for numbers up to 1000, before starting to compare and order numbers using <, > and =. Draco, have been learning to compare numbers up to 10,000 which has enabled us to understand the place value of each digit and progress onto more formal written methods of calculation.
As Scientists, we have started to explore the characteristics of sound, experimenting using tuning forks and analysing the effects of force on volume using elastic bands and cardboard boxes. Draco made sound proof boxes to test which materials were the best at absorbing sound.
Next Week
Next week in English, we will be editing our storm descriptions and creating final drafts. We will then analyse the contrasting survival techniques of Roz the robot and the animals on the island, building towards writing in role as Roz updates her own survival techniques based on what she has observed. In Maths, Corvus will be coming to the end of our unit on Place Value before starting on Addition and Subtraction by refreshing our knowledge of number bonds to 10 and adding/subtracting ones and tens. In Science, we will be furthering our understanding of sound, investigating pitch, distance and soundproofing.
Home-learning
All the children should have a book selected from our class library. We are currently in the middle of assessing which book band children should be reading from - if you notice that your child is reading a text that is too easy/difficult for them, please ask them to highlight this to their teacher and change their book.
This is also the first week of our Maths Homework book so please check your child’s bags for them!
